Yemen's Houthis Ready to Join Iran in Conflict Under Specific Conditions
Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement has declared its willingness to join the conflict on Tehran's side، but only if certain conditions are met. The group's military spokesperson، Yahya Saree، specified that direct military intervention would occur if new alliances form against Iran or if the Red Sea is used for attacks against the country.
Triggering Conditions for Intervention
Saree indicated that the Houthis are prepared for direct military involvement if other nations join the United States and Israel، or if attacks targeting Iran are launched via the Red Sea. He also stated that the Houthis are ready to act if tensions continue against Iran and its "axis of resistance" allies، though he did not specify the exact form of intervention.
Regional Escalation Concerns
This warning heightens concerns about the potential for wider conflict in the region. The Houthis are known for their capability to strike targets outside Yemen and disrupt maritime routes near the Arabian Peninsula. Iran's allies in Lebanon and Iraq have already joined the regional conflict.
Houthi Stance on Red Sea and Demands
Despite their military capabilities and strategic location along the Red Sea coast، the Houthis have not yet officially declared direct participation in the war. Saree emphasized that the Red Sea will not be permitted for "hostile operations" against Iran or any Muslim country. He also urged avoidance of escalating the "blockade" on Yemen.
He demanded an immediate halt to attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran and its allies، including Palestinian territories، Lebanon، and Iraq. Furthermore، he called for the implementation of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Strategic Importance of Bab-el-Mandeb Strait
Previously، Iran had stated its potential to close the Bab-el-Mandeb strait، which connects the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea، in the event of a land invasion of its territory، including its islands. This strait is part of Yemen's territorial waters. In mid-March، a high-ranking Houthi military official، Abed al-Tawr، had suggested that the Houthis might enter the war on Iran's side and close the Bab-el-Mandeb strait to the U.S. and Israel.
This development underscores the volatile geopolitical situation in the region and the potential for the conflict to draw in more actors.
