Almaty Expands Avtobys Electronic Payment System to 13 Bus Routes

Almaty's public transport system is becoming more streamlined with the expansion of the "Avtobys" electronic payment system. This new phase sees the system implemented across 13 additional bus routes, enhancing convenience for daily commuters and visitors alike.

New Routes Added

The "Avtobys" system is now operational on bus routes numbered 51, 117, 219, 221, 228, 234, 258, 33, 232, 4, 85, 8, and 54. This significant rollout follows the initial introduction of the "Avtobys" system in Almaty, which began operations on March 4th.

System Rollout and Previous Challenges

Information regarding the phased introduction of the electronic payment system first emerged on February 7th. The plan was to gradually integrate the system, starting with select routes before a city-wide deployment. However, this initiative faced opposition from the Bus Carriers Association, which lodged a complaint with the Agency for Protection and Development of Competition.

Coexistence of Payment Systems

Currently, Almaty is operating with both the older "Onay" system and the new "Avtobys" system running concurrently. Both platforms offer various options for setting up special fares, providing passengers with flexibility in how they pay for their journeys.

This expansion marks a significant step towards modernizing Almaty's public transportation payment infrastructure, aiming to simplify the travel experience for its citizens.
