Almaty to add 1,093 eco‑buses; city says fares will stay the same amid upgrade
Almaty will roll out 1,093 new low‑emission buses—940 running on compressed natural gas and 153 electric—while keeping current fares unchanged, city officials said, aiming to cut pollution and ease rush‑hour pressure.
This was reported by the Infohub.kz news agency.
What the upgrade includes
The city plans to purchase 940 CNG buses and 153 electric buses as part of a broader shift to cleaner public transport. To support the new fleet, Almaty will build gas‑filling and fast‑charging stations, add turnaround and layover areas, and expand bus depots and interchanges.
Current fleet at a glance
According to the city’s Transport Management Department, 2,939 buses operate on Almaty’s streets daily, with 3,036 vehicles registered in the system overall. The current mix includes 1,392 diesel buses, 1,301 gas buses, 154 trolleybuses and 92 electric buses. On city routes (excluding mountain and suburban lines), environmentally friendly vehicles already account for about 70 percent of services.
No fare hike, payment options expand
City hall’s press service said the purchase will not trigger a ticket price increase: “There is no consideration of raising fares at this time.” Earlier information published on January 6, 2026, noted that Mayor Darkhan Satybaldy had discussed broadening bank card payment options alongside fare policy.
Why it matters
The upgrade is designed to improve air quality and absorb growing passenger demand without passing costs to riders. More reliable operations, especially on high‑frequency corridors, are expected as new vehicles arrive and supporting infrastructure comes online.
