Almaty Youth Theatre's Grand Reopening Delayed Again, Project Cost Soars

The completion of the reconstruction and expansion of Almaty's Youth Theatre (TUZ) has been postponed once more. The facility's opening, previously slated for the end of 2025, has now been moved to August 2026.

The project, which began in January 2025, is set to receive an additional 3.5 billion tenge in funding during the current year, 2026. Initially, the project was estimated at 22 billion tenge when the tender was awarded to "BiGlobal" LLP, a company owned by millionaire Aydyn Rakhymbayev.

Design Changes Drive Up Costs

The delay and increased budget are attributed to significant design modifications. The initial design for the new theatre building was altered because it bore too strong a resemblance to other existing structures. These revisions have consequently escalated the project's total cost to 23.9 billion tenge.

Modernization and Preservation Efforts

Following the extensive renovation, the Youth Theatre is expected to transform into a contemporary cultural hub. Key structural elements of the building will be reinforced, and the roof and facade panels will be replaced. All essential engineering systems and electrical wiring will also be updated.

Significant improvements are also planned for the audience areas. The theatre will feature upgraded stage, lighting, and sound equipment. Furthermore, the seating arrangements, including the spacing between seats and aisle accessibility, will be optimized. Officials have pledged to preserve the building's unique architectural characteristics throughout the renovation.

In addition to the main theatre, a new three-story building with a small stage designed for 200 spectators will be constructed adjacent to the existing structure.

Previous Timelines Missed

The original plan aimed to complete the major overhaul by November 2025, coinciding with the theatre's 80th anniversary. The construction of the new building was initially scheduled for July 2026. However, due to the design changes and the need for additional work, these deadlines have been pushed back.

This is not the first time the theatre's renovation timeline has been extended, adding to the anticipation for its eventual reopening.
