Almaty's First President Park Renovation: Trees Safe, Fountain to Be Revived

Almaty is set to undergo a significant transformation of its First President Park, a beloved public space. The ambitious renovation project aims to introduce new service facilities, administrative and technical buildings, and upgrade the park's infrastructure with modern lighting and a 360-degree panoramic video surveillance system. Existing old playgrounds and sports areas will also be modernized.

Preserving Green Spaces

A primary concern for many residents revolves around the fate of the park's numerous trees. However, the Almaty City Public Space Development Department has stated that no trees are planned for removal. If any individual plants require relocation to meet ecological standards, they will be carefully transplanted to new locations.

Revitalizing the Fountain Complex

The project also includes a much-needed overhaul of the park's central fountain. Despite previous repairs, the fountain has suffered from issues such as ground subsidence during rainy weather, cracked tiling, and internal system failures. A previous repair effort, costing 417 million tenge, was criticized by community activists as merely cosmetic. The fountain is currently inactive, awaiting its comprehensive renovation.

Project Status and Timeline

The concept for the park's revitalization was developed by the British company LDA Design in collaboration with an international landscape architecture and urban planning bureau, alongside local Kazakhstani specialists. The detailed design documentation is being prepared by the local firm High Garden Architects. According to the project's passport, the reconstruction was initially slated to begin in February 2026 and conclude in December of the same year. However, as of mid-March, journalists observed that work had not yet commenced. Currently, the project is in its final stages of preparation: architectural solutions and visualizations are ready and will be presented to the public upon approval. The documentation is undergoing revisions before submission for expert review.

Funding for the project will come from the city budget, supplemented by sponsorship contributions. Oversight of the technical and financial aspects will be managed by authorized state bodies.

Community Engagement

For the residents of Almaty, the preservation of trees and green areas within the park is paramount. This issue has been a recurring point of discussion during previous renovation efforts. The city administration assures that the revitalized park will maintain its status as an ecologically valuable territory, becoming an even more comfortable and inviting space for recreation.
