Astana Silicate Plant to Be Demolished After Years of Resident Complaints
Astana residents can finally expect relief as a long-standing silicate plant, the source of numerous environmental complaints, is set to be demolished. A court decision has been finalized, confirming the removal of the plant's structures, according to the city's architecture, urban planning, and land relations department.
Years of Grievances
Residents of the "Promyshlenny" district have voiced their concerns about the plant's operations since 2019. They had previously appealed to the former city mayor, Altay Kolginov, requesting the relocation of the facility. In 2022, the akimat, in conjunction with the Ministry of Ecology, successfully halted the enterprise's activities through legal action. An unscheduled inspection at the time revealed violations of environmental regulations.
Ongoing Concerns
Despite the legal measures, some local inhabitants report that the plant's operations continue to affect them. Negative reviews concerning the enterprise have appeared on the 2GIS application, with residents claiming the plant is still functioning.
Court Mandates Demolition
The city department clarified that the court's decision involves the compulsory acquisition of the plant's facilities for state needs. "Regarding the modernization of commercial and industrial facilities on the right bank of the city, a decision has been made on the compulsory seizure of silicate plant facilities for state needs. In accordance with the court's legally binding decision, the buildings and structures of the silicate plant are subject to demolition to further implement the project in line with the master plan," the department stated.
