Blizzard shuts two sections of Astana–Kokshetau highway; reopening slated this morning
Two stretches of the Astana–Kokshetau highway were closed early on 6 January due to a blizzard and black ice, disrupting morning travel across Kazakhstan’s Akmola region. Officials plan a phased reopening if conditions improve.
This was reported by the Infohub.kz news agency.
Where the road is closed
According to KazAutoZhol, restrictions began at 06:30 local time on the national Astana – Kokshetau – Petropavl – Russian Federation border route. Traffic is halted for all vehicle types on km 242–304 (Shchuchinsk – Kokshetau).
At 07:00, a second segment—km 18–232 (Astana – Shchuchinsk)—was also closed to all categories of vehicles.
When the road may reopen
Authorities aim to reopen the Shchuchinsk – Kokshetau section at 09:00 on 6 January 2026, followed by Astana – Shchuchinsk at 10:00. These times are provisional and may change depending on weather and visibility.
Weather alert in effect
Kazhydromet issued a storm warning for 6 January across Akmola region, forecasting a blizzard, snow and widespread ice. Reduced visibility and slick surfaces are creating hazardous driving conditions along key corridors.
Advice for drivers
Motorists are advised to delay non‑essential trips and monitor official channels for updates. If travel is unavoidable once sections reopen, keep speeds down, increase following distances, and ensure vehicles are prepared for winter conditions.
