Boris Johnson Urges NATO to Deploy Troops to Ukraine Now
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called for NATO troops to be deployed to Ukraine immediately, suggesting that if such a plan is considered post-war, it should be implemented now.
Johnson made these remarks during an interview with the BBC, questioning the delay in action. He clarified that his proposal concerns peacekeeping units rather than combat forces.
Western Indecisiveness Criticized
The former Prime Minister believes that a different Western response to Russia's escalating aggression following the annexation of Crimea could have prevented the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He identified a fundamental lack of decisiveness in decision-making as the primary problem concerning the war in Ukraine.
"I think Putin still doesn't believe, or we haven't convinced him, that we see a free and independent European Ukraine as our strategic objective," Johnson stated. "I think he will continue to push forward until he sees evidence of our resolve."
Diplomatic Efforts Underway
In parallel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously indicated a potential for revisiting positions in trilateral negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. This statement followed a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
A third round of talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States took place in Geneva on February 18. Reports from that meeting indicated an agreement was reached for the U.S. to monitor the ceasefire regime.
