China Launches Maritime Operation Near Taiwan Amid Regional Tensions
China has announced the commencement of a special operation focused on maritime law enforcement in waters east of Taiwan. The operation, which began on Saturday, June 7th, is being conducted by the Ministry of Transport in collaboration with maritime safety administrations from Fujian and Guangdong provinces, as well as navigation and rescue centers in the East China Sea.
Objective of the Operation
The primary goals of this initiative are to fully exercise China's maritime administrative jurisdiction, enhance patrol and monitoring capabilities in key waterways, ensure the safety of maritime traffic, and safeguard national rights and interests. This move is presented as a direct response to recent discussions between Japan and the Philippines regarding the delineation of maritime boundaries east of Taiwan.
Regional Maritime Disputes
Beijing views the bilateral talks between Japan and the Philippines as a significant infringement upon China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. The discussions were initiated during a visit by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Japan, where both nations agreed to commence negotiations on defining their exclusive economic zones and continental shelves in the waters east of Taiwan.
China's Stance
Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Japan and the Philippines' attempt to delineate maritime boundaries without China's involvement violates the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, other international legal norms, and fundamental principles of international relations. She emphasized that such actions would significantly curtail China's maritime rights and interests, which Beijing will not accept.
"In accordance with domestic law and international law... China possesses an exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in this region. According to the Convention, the delineation of exclusive economic zones and continental shelves between states with opposite or adjacent coastlines should be conducted based on the agreement of the parties and the principles of equity," Mao explained. She further stressed that any delineation of waters east of Taiwan must involve China's participation.
China considers Taiwan an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China and maintains that adherence to the "One China" principle is a mandatory prerequisite for any country seeking to establish or maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing.
This development highlights the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region and China's assertive stance on maritime claims.
