Deceased Relatives' WhatsApp Messages Spark Courtroom Mystery in Atyrau

A perplexing situation has emerged during a court hearing in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, where relatives of victims have reported receiving messages and audio recordings from the phones of their deceased loved ones. These communications have created a disturbing illusion that the departed are still alive.

Eerie Audio Messages Surface

During a court session concerning Sultan Sarsemaliyev, the brother of the deceased Nasip Oteshkalieva, Tilekkabyl Oteshkaliev, testified about receiving an audio message on November 7th of last year. The message, sent from his sister's phone number to their family's WhatsApp group, inquired about the well-being and daily lives of their relatives.

"It could have been an old recording from when she was alive," Tilekkabyl Oteshkaliev stated in court, attempting to rationalize the unsettling message.

WhatsApp Deception Uncovered

Previously, the aunt of Nauryz Mukangaliyev, Shylmagambetova, also testified that she could not reach her nephew but received messages via WhatsApp. These messages falsely informed relatives that Nauryz had taken his mother to Tashkent for medical treatment due to her deteriorating health. Further messages indicated that livestock were being sold to cover the costs of this supposed treatment.

Financial Losses Detailed

According to the indictment, 17 sheep belonging to Maksot Karabalin were sold for 950,000 tenge. Additionally, two cows were reportedly sold for 500,000 tenge in Nauryz Mukangaliyev's name. The prosecution also revealed that Sarsemaliyev allegedly continued to access the bank cards of the deceased relatives, withdrawing their pensions and social benefits.

The prosecution stated that the state incurred a loss of over 600,000 tenge through the deceased individuals' accounts. The proceeds from the livestock sales added another 1,450,000 tenge to the total financial damages.

Motive Behind the Crimes

Prosecutor Miras Bauryzhanov suggested that the accused believed the crimes would go undetected for a significant period after Nauryz Mukangaliyev, Nasip Oteshkalieva, Maksot Karabalin, and Meirangul Karabalin were murdered. An alternative theory presented is that the accused planned to evade capture afterward.
