Europe Destroys Russian Rocket Launchpad in French Guiana
The European Space Agency (ESA) has demolished a launch complex at the Kourou Cosmodrome in French Guiana, which was previously used for Russian Soyuz-ST rockets. This move marks a significant break in the 15-year collaboration between Europe and Russia in the space sector, largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Demolition of the Soyuz Launch Complex
The 52-meter mobile technical tower was destroyed in a controlled demolition. Video footage of the event was shared by Dmitry Stugovets, former head of Roscosmos's press service. Prior to the demolition, the launch facility had its four supporting 'tulip' arms, which held rockets before liftoff, and cable masts severed.
New Era for Kourou Cosmodrome
The remaining infrastructure has been transferred to Maiaspace, a startup subsidiary of the French company Arianespace. Maiaspace plans to utilize the complex for its new Maia rocket, with its first launch scheduled for 2027. This transition signifies a shift towards European-led space initiatives at the Kourou site.
End of a 15-Year Partnership
The ESA and Roscosmos's joint 'Soyuz at Kourou' program facilitated the launch of commercial satellites into orbit for 15 years, completing 26 successful launches during its operation. The partnership officially ceased following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In response to sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Russia's space industry on February 24, 2022, Roscosmos announced the suspension of Soyuz rocket launches from Kourou and the withdrawal of Russian specialists.
