Hungary's Political Landscape Shifts as Tisza Party Leader Issues Ultimatum to President
Hungary's political scene is experiencing a dramatic shift following the recent parliamentary elections. Péter Magyar, the charismatic leader of the Tisza party, which secured a significant victory, has issued a bold ultimatum to the nation's President, Tamás Sulyok, demanding his resignation.
Magyar's Demand for Resignation
At a press conference, Magyar directly addressed the President, stating, "I asked him to resign from his post. This demand will be met after Parliament elects me as Prime Minister and I form a government. If he does not leave voluntarily, we will introduce the necessary changes to the constitution and remove him from office."
Magyar acknowledged that the Tisza party does not currently have its own presidential candidate. However, he expressed confidence that a figure representing the unity of the Hungarian people would emerge.
Election Results Signal Major Change
The parliamentary elections, held on April 12, saw the Tisza party achieve a resounding victory over the ruling Fidesz party. Preliminary results indicate that Tisza is projected to secure 136 out of the 199 seats in Parliament, while Fidesz is expected to win 57 seats. The final results are anticipated to be confirmed by the evening of April 18.
This substantial majority grants the Tisza party the constitutional dominance needed to enact significant political changes. The outgoing Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has already conceded defeat following the election results.
