Kazakhstan Cement Plant Fails to Pay 350 Workers for a Month

In Akmola region, Kazakhstan, employees of two companies, Kokshetau-Cement LLP and Stepnogorsk-Su MK, have not received their salaries for the past month. This situation has led to an intervention by local authorities to ensure the workers are paid.

Unpaid Wages Uncovered

The Birzhan Sal District Prosecutor's Office discovered that approximately 350 workers had not been paid their wages since December. Following the prosecutor's involvement, the company has since settled over 60 million tenge in outstanding payments.

Management Held Accountable

The management of the enterprise has been held responsible for the wage arrears. In addition to clearing the debt, they were fined 2 million tenge for tax and penalty violations related to the unpaid salaries.

Company Ownership Revealed

Publicly available information indicates that Kokshetau-Cement LLP is founded by Karina Sarsenova, the daughter of Rashid Sarsenov, identified as one of Kazakhstan's wealthiest businessmen. Karina Sarsenova, 50, was listed as the founder of eight companies and one individual entrepreneur as of December 2023. She is also noted as a member of the Union of Writers of Russia.

Past Issues with Associated Companies

This is not the first reported dispute involving enterprises linked to the Sarsenov family. Previously, workers at a plant in the Pavlodar region were found to be underpaid and forced to cover their mandatory social health insurance contributions themselves. Additionally, the same company faced a substantial fine of nearly 100 million tenge for violating environmental regulations.
