Kazakhstan issues Monday weather alerts: blizzard, black ice and 15–23 m/s winds
Much of Kazakhstan faces disruptive weather on Monday, 5 January, as Kazhydromet warns of snow, blizzards, fog and hazardous black ice, with wind gusts reaching 15–23 m/s in places. The conditions may reduce visibility and impact road and air travel across multiple regions.

Northern and eastern regions: blizzard and icy roads
In Abai Region, overnight snow will be accompanied by blowing snow, fog and black ice, with gusts in Zharma district potentially up to 23 m/s. Semey is forecast to see snow, blizzard conditions and ice at night and in the early morning.
East Kazakhstan Region is expected to retain snow, drifting snow and ice through the day. Oskemen will see snow and blizzard conditions, with fog likely at night and in the morning.
Akmola and Pavlodar: strong winds and drifting snow
Akmola Region will have night-time snow and blizzards in the west and north, and patches of ground blizzard during the day. In Kokshetau, southwesterly winds may strengthen to 15–20 m/s in the morning and daytime.
Pavlodar Region forecasts night snow and ground blizzards, with winds of 15–20 m/s in western and southern areas. Pavlodar city should expect snow and drifting snow overnight.
Karaganda, Kostanay, North Kazakhstan: 15–20 m/s winds
Karaganda Region’s west, north and east will see night snow and ground blizzards, with areas of fog and black ice. Kostanay will have morning and daytime snow, blizzard and fog, with winds of 15–20 m/s.
North Kazakhstan Region expects snow and blizzard in the west at night, spreading to the north and east by day with winds up to 15–20 m/s. Petropavl is forecast to see snow and blizzard during the day.
Western regions: mixed precipitation and fog
Aktobe Region will face night snow in the north and northwest with black ice and ground blizzards; by day, rain mixed with snow is likely in the west and north. In Aktobe city, winds may reach 15–18 m/s, with night snow and ice followed by rain-snow and blizzard conditions.
West Kazakhstan Region anticipates rain turning to snow in the west at night, with blizzard and black ice risks. Oral may see mixed precipitation, blizzard and fog during the day. Atyrau Region expects fog and black ice in western, northern and southern districts. In Mangystau, winds may strengthen to 15–20 m/s in the west, with widespread fog.
South and southeast: foggy intervals, gusty passes
Almaty city is likely to see episodes of fog on 5–7 January, especially at night and in the morning. In Almaty Region, fog persists 5–7 January; on 6 January some locations could see winds up to 15–20 m/s. Fog is expected overnight in Konaev.
In Zhetisu Region, winds may reach 15–20 m/s in the east, with fog and black ice across eastern, northern and mountain–foothill areas; fog is likely in Taldykorgan. Zhambyl’s mountain districts face night snow, ground blizzards, black ice and winds of 15–20 m/s. Turkistan Region will see fog across northern, western and southern areas and on mountain passes, where winds may reach 15–20 m/s; fog is also expected in Shymkent and at times in Taraz.
Astana and other cities
Astana should expect occasional light snow and drifting snow, with southwesterly winds strengthening to 15–20 m/s in the morning and daytime. Kyzylorda faces fog and black ice, while Atyrau will see intermittent fog.
