Kazakhstan May Revoke Licenses of Two More Universities Amid Quality Drive

Kazakhstan is intensifying its efforts to improve the quality of higher education, leading to a review of several universities. Following the revocation of licenses for three institutions in recent years, two more universities are currently under scrutiny, according to Sayasat Nurbek, the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

Ongoing Scrutiny of Universities

During a government briefing, journalists inquired about the ministry's assessment of higher education quality and the number of universities that have lost their licenses or ceased operations due to substandard education. Minister Nurbek confirmed that three universities have had their licenses revoked in the past few years.

He further stated that work is currently underway concerning two additional universities. "Work is being carried out regarding several universities. Currently, work is being done on two universities," the minister said.

Protecting Student Interests

However, Nurbek refrained from naming the specific universities under review. He explained the ministry's cautious approach, emphasizing the potential impact on thousands of students. "As I mentioned at a previous briefing: name a specific university, but we must approach this very responsibly. Because we are talking about hundreds of thousands of students here. If I disclose certain procedural issues before a decision is made, it could affect these students," he noted.

The minister assured that information would be released once decisions have been finalized.

Past Cases of Non-Compliance

In a related matter, Sayasat Nurbek previously commented on an institution dubbed the "bloggers' university." This entity had reportedly promised bachelor's degrees within two years. The minister clarified that obtaining a license and accreditation from the ministry's relevant committee is mandatory for offering educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. He confirmed that the ministry had not issued a license to the aforementioned "university."
