Kazakhstan phasing out old 2,000 and 10,000 tenge banknotes
Kazakhstan is nearing the completion of its banknote modernization program, with older versions of the 2,000 and 10,000 tenge denominations set to be phased out as legal tender.
The National Bank of Kazakhstan is continuing its rollout of new banknotes featuring contemporary designs and motifs inspired by Saka culture, part of the "Saka style" series.
Timeline for Old and New Banknotes
Both old and new banknote designs will circulate concurrently for a specified period. The validity of the 10,000 tenge notes as a means of payment will end on June 28, 2026. For the 2,000 tenge notes, this deadline is June 24, 2026. Until these dates, old banknotes can be used without restriction in shops and for all financial transactions. Refusal to accept them constitutes a legal violation.
No Need to Rush to the Bank
National Bank specialists emphasize that there is no immediate need to exchange money. After the circulation period for old banknotes concludes, they can still be exchanged at second-tier banks and "Kazpost" branches for an additional three years. Furthermore, the National Bank's branches will accept these older notes indefinitely, allowing citizens ample time to exchange their old currency for new ones without pressure.
Introducing the New "Saka Style" Banknotes
The new banknotes, issued under the "Saka style" series, are becoming cultural symbols of the nation. The updated 10,000 tenge note was introduced on June 28, 2024, while the 2,000 tenge note entered circulation on December 25, 2024.
The 2,000 tenge banknote is predominantly green, adorned with Saka motifs, an image of an argali (mountain sheep), and an "eternal" ornament. Its central feature is a scenic depiction of Burabay National Park, highlighting the country's natural wealth.
The 10,000 tenge banknote features a blue-and-orange color scheme. Its main symbol is a snow leopard, representing Kazakhstan's strength and independence, complemented by a "shield" ornament symbolizing protection and traditional power.
What This Means for Kazakhstanis
The transition away from old banknotes is more than a formal procedure; it's part of a broader initiative to modernize the currency circulation, enhancing the reliability and security of payments while showcasing national identity through design. It is important for residents to be aware of the approaching end dates for the circulation of old banknotes, but there is no need for panic or a rush to exchange them, as banks will facilitate the exchange of old notes over several years.
