Kazakhstan Plans Own Car Brand in Partnership with Malaysia's Proton
Kazakhstan is set to embark on an ambitious project to launch its own national car brand, a move that could significantly reshape the country's automotive landscape. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Baiterek National Management Holding, with a key partnership already established with Malaysia's renowned Proton company.
Forging a New Automotive Cluster
Rustam Karagoyshin, Chairman of the Board of Baiterek Holding, confirmed the development, stating that discussions are underway to establish a joint venture with Proton. This collaboration aims to go beyond simple assembly, with plans to create a comprehensive automotive cluster focused on deepening the localization of vehicle components. This strategic approach is designed to foster a robust domestic automotive industry.
"We are talking about a Kazakhstani brand. If it is produced here, then, of course, it will be a Kazakhstani brand," Karagoyshin explained, highlighting the vision for a truly national product.
Deepening Technological Ties
The partnership with Proton is envisioned as a deep technological collaboration. Baiterek Holding is actively engaged in negotiations to enhance this relationship, with hopes that Proton will play an active role in the technological aspects of production. This suggests a commitment to knowledge transfer and advanced manufacturing capabilities within Kazakhstan.
Responding to Market Dynamics
Karagoyshin emphasized the strategic importance of developing Kazakhstan's own automotive manufacturing capabilities, particularly in light of the growing influence of Chinese brands in the global market. He noted the success of Chinese manufacturers in displacing established European brands, underscoring the need for Kazakhstan to strengthen its local production and localization efforts to remain competitive.
While the specific brand name and model for the new Kazakhstani car are still under discussion, the project signifies a major step towards industrial self-sufficiency in the automotive sector. This initiative follows a record year for Kazakhstan's auto industry in 2025, which saw increased production and sales of new vehicles.
