Kazakhstan Revitalizes Railway Stations: Modernization Project Underway
A significant modernization effort is underway in Kazakhstan's Akmola region, aiming to replace eight aging railway stations with new, contemporary facilities. Many of the existing structures have fallen into disrepair, making them unsuitable for renovation.
Why the Overhaul?
According to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the national railway company, the old buildings at stations including Derzhavinskaya, Atbasar, Arshaly, Ulenkty, Saryoba, Yerkenchilik, Ereymentau, and Esil are beyond repair. Consequently, a decision has been made to demolish them and construct modern replacements. This initiative is part of a broader program to reconstruct 16 railway facilities across the region.
Project Timeline and Progress
Currently, the design and estimate documentation for all 16 projects is being prepared and submitted for state review. KTZ reports that construction work is nearing completion at the Kokshetau, Kurort-Borovoe (Shchuchinsk), and Makinka stations.
The comprehensive completion of construction and installation work for all stations is slated for the end of 2026.
Investment and Contractors
The station renovation project is being funded by KTZ's own capital. However, the total cost is yet to be finalized. A precise financial figure will be determined only after the state expert review provides a positive conclusion on the project documentation.
The construction contracts have been awarded to Integra Construction KZ and Zharkyn Qurylys LLP. These companies will operate under an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) model, managing the entire process from design to commissioning.
Addressing Community Concerns
There were prior reports of delays in the commencement of work at the Shchuchinsk station, despite its readiness for renovation. KTZ attributed these delays to initial preparatory phases, which included site clearance, fencing installation, and rerouting of utility lines. Demolition work was fully completed by December.
Contractor Backgrounds
Integra Construction KZ has been operating since 2013 and is not listed as an unfair participant in public procurement. However, court records indicate the company has paid fines and penalties exceeding 4.8 billion tenge. Their expertise lies in railway and metro construction.
Zharkyn Qurylys LLP, established in 2006, primarily focuses on residential construction. This company has paid approximately 98 million tenge in fines and penalties through court proceedings and is also not on the list of unfair participants.
Broader Station Modernization Plans
Beyond the Akmola region, KTZ plans to modernize over 120 railway stations nationwide by the end of 2026. Of these, 37 have been declared dilapidated and will be demolished to make way for new structures. Currently, construction and installation work has been completed at 36 stations, with another 48 stations at an 85-95% completion stage.
