Kazakhstan: Sheep Prices for Kurban Ait Vary Widely by Region

With the Islamic holiday of Kurban Ait just days away, the prices for sacrificial sheep are becoming clearer across Kazakhstan. However, shoppers will find considerable variation depending on their region, the animal's weight, and local demand.

Regional Price Differences Emerge

In several cities, including Aktobe, Karaganda, Oral, and Shymkent, the lowest price for a sheep starts at 60,000 tenge. Meanwhile, in Almaty, Aktau, Zhezdy, Taldykorgan, Turkistan, and Taraz, the entry-level price is slightly higher, beginning at 70,000 tenge.

Across many parts of the country, the average price for a sacrificial sheep falls between 80,000 and 140,000 tenge. Specific examples include Petropavl where sheep range from 75,000 to 120,000 tenge, Kokchetav at 80,000 to 120,000 tenge, and Kyzylorda between 80,000 and 110,000 tenge. In Ust-Kamenogorsk, prices can reach 130,000 tenge, and in Kostanay, they can go up to 150,000 tenge.

Capital and Western Regions See Higher Costs

The capital city, Astana, presents a notably higher price range, with sheep costing between 90,000 and 170,000 tenge. Similar price points are observed in Semey (approximately 90,000-140,000 tenge) and Kuanayev (around 90,000-120,000 tenge).

The western and southern regions have recorded some of the highest prices. In Atyrau, sheep prices start at 120,000 tenge and can go up to 150,000 tenge. Pavlodar sees prices reaching 180,000 tenge, and Zhezdy up to 160,000 tenge.

Turkistan Province Leads in Price Extremes

The Turkistan region stands out with the widest price disparity, with sheep ranging from 70,000 to a high of 200,000 tenge. Sellers attribute this significant difference to the high demand during the holiday period, as well as variations in the animals' weight, breed, and how they have been raised.

Experts caution that prices may fluctuate as Kurban Ait draws nearer. Factors such as demand, the overall supply of livestock, logistical costs, and the organization of designated slaughtering areas typically influence the final prices.
