Kazakhstan to Hold Constitutional Assembly Elections in August
Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has set the date for the upcoming Constitutional Assembly elections, a key part of the nation's political system overhaul. These significant elections, which will follow the implementation of the new constitution, are scheduled to be held in August of this year.
New Constitution and Political Reforms
Speaking at a ceremony honoring scientists, President Tokayev emphasized the importance of the new constitution, recently approved by referendum. He highlighted that the preamble of the new Basic Law prioritizes the values of culture, education, science, and innovation, making their development a constitutional obligation for the state.
"As you know, a referendum of great historical significance took place in Kazakhstan on March 15. With the support of the majority of citizens, a new Constitution was adopted that strengthens the foundations of our state and puts the country on a stable development trajectory in all areas, including science. For the first time, the preamble of our Basic Law clearly defines culture, education, science, and innovation as guiding values. This means strategic importance is given to the comprehensive support of these areas. Most importantly, the development of these directions has become a constitutional duty of the state," stated the President.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed gratitude to the scientific community for their contributions to drafting and adopting the constitution. The new Basic Law is set to take effect on July 1, 2026. Until then, all primary laws must be aligned with the new constitutional provisions, a task that will be undertaken by the Parliament.
Constitutional Assembly Elections: Why Announce Early?
The Head of State officially announced that the Constitutional Assembly elections would occur in August. President Tokayev explained that this information is being released in advance to provide political parties with ample time to prepare for the election campaign and engage with voters.
"As the Head of State, I consider it very important to provide advance information about significant events for our country. From the moment the Constitution comes into force, I will sign a decree on holding elections for a unicameral Constitutional Assembly. The elections will be held in August this year. I am announcing this deliberately early because parties need sufficient time to define their plans and prepare for the election campaign. This will give parties approximately five months to conduct proper work with voters," said Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
According to the President, the Constitutional Assembly elections will pave the way for a fundamental transformation of Kazakhstan's political system. These reforms are expected to contribute to a positive shift in societal consciousness.
