Kazakhstan is poised to revolutionize its music industry by introducing royalty payments for local music authors and producers. This significant development aims to ensure creators are fairly compensated for their work, with the first payments expected to be disbursed as early as June-July.

Introducing the QazCopyright Platform

The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Justice, with Vice Minister Bekbolat Moldabekov announcing the launch of the digital platform named QazCopyright. This new system is designed to eliminate inefficiencies in the previous royalty collection process and bring transparency to the sector.

Addressing Past Shortfalls

Previously, the royalty system operated largely on paper, leading to significant financial losses for Kazakh artists and producers. It is estimated that creators missed out on approximately 30 billion tenge due to the outdated and ineffective system.

Real-Time Tracking and Transparency

The QazCopyright platform, which began its rollout in January, offers real-time monitoring of music usage. Artists will be able to track how many times their songs are played on television or radio directly through a dedicated mobile application. This feature promises unprecedented transparency and accountability in royalty distribution.

Future Expansion Plans

Looking ahead, the platform's capabilities are set to expand further. By next year, the system will incorporate music usage in a wider range of public spaces, including bars, karaoke venues, and restaurants, in addition to television and radio. This expansion aims to ensure that every song generates its rightful income for its creators.

Streamlining Disputes and Collaboration

The Ministry of Justice anticipates that this automated system will significantly reduce disputes related to royalty payments. Furthermore, it is expected to foster better interaction and collaboration between authors and content users.
