Middle East Nations Discuss Non-Aggression Pact with Iran

Middle Eastern countries are exploring the possibility of establishing a non-aggression pact with Iran. This initiative, spearheaded by Saudi Arabia, aims to reduce regional tensions and has garnered support from European nations.

A Pact Inspired by Helsinki

Saudi Arabia is considering the 1975 Helsinki Accords as a model for the proposed pact with Iran. These accords were instrumental in easing Cold War tensions in Europe. The original agreement, signed by the Soviet Union, the United States, and European countries, affirmed the inviolability of post-World War II borders and included commitments to protect human rights.

European Support for the Initiative

According to the Financial Times, numerous European countries have welcomed Saudi Arabia's proposal. They are encouraging Persian Gulf nations to participate in the discussions. European nations believe this agreement could mitigate the risk of new conflicts and offer security assurances to Iran.

Regional Dynamics

Saudi Arabia and its allies, including the United States and Israel, are reportedly planning to pursue such a pact following the conclusion of military operations against Iran. However, the readiness of some countries to join such an agreement remains uncertain. For instance, the United Arab Emirates, which is focused on strengthening ties with Israel, is said to be hesitant to join this pact.
