Residents of Tibet were left in awe after witnessing a spectacular and rare atmospheric event during a recent thunderstorm. Streaks of vibrant red light, described as colossal and glowing 'tentacles' reaching into space, illuminated the night sky, creating a scene reminiscent of a science fiction film.

Understanding the 'Red Sprite' Phenomenon

These extraordinary celestial displays are known as 'red sprites.' Unlike typical lightning that occurs within or between clouds, red sprites manifest much higher in the atmosphere, between 50 and 90 kilometers (approximately 30 to 55 miles) above the Earth's surface.

The Science Behind the Spectacle

The formation of red sprites is linked to powerful electrical discharges from thunderstorms below. When intense lightning strikes create strong electrical fields in the upper atmosphere, they can excite nitrogen molecules. This excitation causes the nitrogen to emit a distinct red glow, giving the sprites their characteristic color.

Early Observations and Discovery

While the term 'red sprite' was coined after their first accidental scientific observation in 1989 by researchers at the University of Minnesota, anecdotal reports of unusual lightning-like phenomena above storm clouds existed even earlier. Pilots had previously described seeing peculiar, upward-reaching electrical discharges from the tops of thunderclouds.
