New Water Sources Sought to Combat Mangystau's Growing Scarcity
The Mangystau region is facing an increasingly urgent water scarcity crisis. In response, two significant projects are being initiated to identify new water sources, aiming to improve the region's water supply and ensure sustainable usage.
Exploring Underground Water Potential
According to the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, these initiatives are designed to enhance the potential of underground water reserves amidst ongoing water shortages and the challenges posed by climate change. The projects are expected to significantly improve water provision for populated areas like Aktau. Furthermore, this effort is anticipated to bolster economic development and increase the reliability of the water supply system.
Strategic Water Resource Management
The exploration and efficient utilization of underground water resources are central to the government's policy. This strategy focuses on effective water resource management and ensuring their long-term preservation.
Kazakhstan possesses a total of 4,803 known underground water deposits. These reserves have the capacity to supply 21.2 million cubic meters daily for household and drinking needs, 2.4 million cubic meters for industrial and technical purposes, and 19.6 million cubic meters for irrigation. Currently, only about 3.6% of these resources, approximately 1.5 million cubic meters per day, are being utilized.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure vital resources for the region's future. The exploration for new water sources is a critical step in mitigating the effects of drought and ensuring a stable supply for residents and industries.
