Over 20 Nations Condemn Iran's Strait of Hormuz Blockade

Tensions have escalated in the critical Strait of Hormuz, prompting a strong rebuke from more than 20 nations. In a unified declaration, these countries have condemned Iran's attempts to blockade the vital waterway and expressed their readiness to contribute to ensuring its safe navigation.

International Condemnation of Iranian Actions

The joint statement, released by the UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 21, garnered signatures from European nations, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Bahrain, and the UAE itself. The declaration specifically condemned Iran's attacks on commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf, as well as strikes on oil and gas facilities, which effectively amounted to an attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz.

The signatory nations urged Iran to immediately cease threats, mine-laying, and the use of drones and missiles. They also called on Iran to abandon its efforts to obstruct commercial shipping and to comply with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Significance of the Strait of Hormuz and Global Economic Impact

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime chokepoint, through which approximately 20 percent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported. Any closure or obstruction of this strait by Iran could lead to a sharp increase in global energy market prices and negatively impact worldwide economic growth.

U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized NATO countries for not participating more actively in ensuring the security of the strait. According to U.S. military assessments, Iran's military capabilities in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz have been significantly weakened following recent aerial attacks.

Economic forecasts suggest that if the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues until the end of June, global economic growth could decrease by 2.9 percent in the second quarter. Should this situation persist for three quarters, oil prices could potentially reach $132 per barrel.

This collective international stance underscores the global importance of maintaining free and secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz for international trade and economic stability.
