Pavlodar Region on High Alert Amid Rising Flood Risks
The Pavlodar region is now on high alert as authorities brace for potential flooding. Governor Asain Baikanov has emphasized the need for preparedness, urging all local administrations and emergency services to be ready for the most severe scenarios.
Anticipating Spring Thaw
A significant warm-up is expected to begin around March 21st, with daytime temperatures potentially reaching up to +16 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures around +4 degrees Celsius. This rapid thaw is particularly concerning in the southern districts, where snowmelt is accelerating and increasing the risk of inundation.
Emergency Response Mobilized
In response to the escalating threat, additional forces and equipment from the Department of Emergency Situations were dispatched to the Bayanaul district starting March 17th. A powerful motor pump, capable of discharging 150 liters of water per second, was also transported from Ekibastuz to the village of Shiderti.
Addressing Ice Jams
Specialized teams, equipped with personnel, machinery, watercraft, and drones, have been formed to tackle potential ice jams on the Suly River in the Aktogay district. Explosive work to clear ice obstructions commenced on March 18th across three sections of the river, covering an area of 1,000 square meters. Additionally, controlled water releases from the Suly reservoir began on March 19th, increasing the discharge rate from 2 to 31 cubic meters per second.
Governor's Directives for Coordinated Action
Governor Baikanov has instructed all district and city services to ensure coordinated efforts with the Department of Emergency Situations and the regional administration. He stressed the importance of round-the-clock monitoring of high-risk areas, maintaining the readiness of engineering equipment and rapid response teams, and ensuring swift responses to resident concerns. "I demand prompt action on residents' appeals and coordinated work from all services. We must be prepared for any scenario and act as quickly as possible," stated Asain Baikanov.
Currently, engineering equipment across the Pavlodar region is on round-the-clock duty, and the civil defense system has been placed on high alert.
