Rare Leopard 'Altynkiz' Spotted Again in Ustyurt Reserve, Covering 450km

A rare and elusive leopard named Altynkiz has been sighted again within the sacred Ustyurt Nature Reserve in Mangystau, Kazakhstan, bringing renewed excitement to conservationists. This reappearance marks a significant success in the ongoing efforts to protect the region's rich biodiversity.

Altynkiz's Recent Sightings

First captured by camera traps in 2024, the leopard Altynkiz was again observed within the reserve's boundaries in March and May of this year. These sightings indicate that the wild cat is actively moving and expanding its territory, a positive sign for its population.

A Journey of Over 450 Kilometers

Researchers have tracked Altynkiz's movements, revealing that the leopard's range extends beyond the Ustyurt Reserve to the Kyzylsay Natural Park. The total distance covered during these journeys is estimated to be approximately 450 kilometers, highlighting the animal's remarkable freedom and endurance in the wild.

Seeking a Mate

Experts speculate that Altynkiz's extensive travels are primarily driven by the search for a mate. However, these efforts have not yet yielded results, as female leopards typically do not travel as far as males. While there are no confirmed reports of female leopards crossing from Turkmenistan into Kazakhstan, this possibility cannot be entirely ruled out.

International Collaboration in Conservation

The ability to monitor Altynkiz's movements is a direct result of an international project initiated in 2023. This initiative is coordinated by the Biodiversity Research and Conservation Center (BRCC) public foundation, demonstrating close cooperation between the staff of the Ustyurt Reserve and the Kyzylsay Natural Park.
