Sairan Lake Water Quality Concerns Delay Summer Swimming Season in Almaty
Almaty's popular recreational spot, Sairan Lake, has failed pre-summer water quality tests, preventing residents from swimming in its waters for the time being. The lake has also been temporarily drained due to essential repair work on its water supply system.
Why is Sairan Lake Being Drained?
The process of refilling Sairan Lake has been halted due to a malfunction in two sluice gates on Tole Bi Street, which are responsible for supplying water to the lake. This technical issue prevents proper regulation of water flow, hindering the lake's full replenishment.
According to the city administration, repair work commenced on June 1st and is scheduled for completion by June 3rd. Following these repairs, the lake will be refilled.
Can You Swim in Sairan Lake?
The Almaty Department of Sanitary and Epidemiological Control has addressed the question of whether swimming will be permitted after the repairs. Results from water tests conducted in May revealed that the water in the Almaly district does not meet hygienic standards for lactose-fermenting coliform bacteria (LKP) and dissolved oxygen levels. Tests from the Auezov district are still under examination.
Experts note that the water quality has not significantly changed compared to last year. The contamination is suspected to stem from the pollution of the Bolshaya Almaty River, with household waste and sewage potentially entering the lake and degrading water quality. Laboratory studies have supported these findings.
To improve water quality, specialists recommend identifying and penalizing illegal dumping sites along the Bolshaya Almaty River. The condition of Sairan Lake's water will be monitored monthly from May to September.
When Will Swimming Be Allowed?
Currently, swimming in Sairan Lake is officially prohibited. Access will only be granted after the embankment beautification is complete, a sanitary-epidemiological conclusion is obtained, and the water is confirmed to meet all hygienic standards.
Sairan Before Repairs
During an inspection on May 21st, signs indicating "No Swimming" were observed along all shores of the lake. Despite being filled with water at the time, the rescue posts on the shore were closed, with no lifeguards or necessary equipment present.
When Will Lifeguards Be On Duty?
The Almaty Department of Emergency Situations has stated that lifeguards are currently on duty daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Starting June 1st, they will operate on a 24-hour schedule. Joint raids with police officers are also being conducted to disseminate information on water safety regulations.
Police Presence at Sairan
As of late May, it was reported that the absence of police officers at modular posts indicated that repair work and the transfer of the facility to the akimat's balance were not yet finalized. However, police officers are conducting foot patrols to ensure public order. On some days, National Guard servicemen also monitor the situation.
Controversy Surrounding Sairan Lake Modernization
The modernization project for Sairan Lake has been one of Almaty's most discussed initiatives for 2025. The contracting company faced legal action for failing to complete the work on time and was fined over 23 million tenge. However, a subsequent court decision overturned the ruling that deemed the company ineligible to participate in state procurement.
Previously, residents had complained about unpleasant odors and murky water emanating from the lake.
