Sisters Tragically Killed in Atyrau Crash; Driver Faces 5 Years

A devastating road accident in Atyrau has claimed the lives of two sisters, leaving their family and community in mourning. The incident, which occurred on September 23, 2025, involved a Chevrolet Cobalt carrying the two passengers.

Tragic Loss of Siblings

The victims, identified as 41-year-old Marjangul Nurgaliyeva and her 32-year-old sister Akgul Nurgaliyeva, were passengers in the Chevrolet Cobalt when the collision took place on M. Mametova Street. The horrific aftermath of the crash quickly circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention to the tragedy.

The Accused Driver

At the center of the legal proceedings is 50-year-old Rauan Izbasarov, the driver of the Chevrolet Cobalt. A former police officer who has since retired, Izbasarov faces charges under Part 4 of Article 345 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan for violating road traffic rules, resulting in the death of two or more persons due to negligence. The case is currently being heard by a jury.

Details of the Collision

According to the indictment, Izbasarov was operating his vehicle as a taxi. On the day of the accident, while driving along Mametova Street, he attempted to make a left turn onto Kerderi Street. Prosecutors allege that he failed to yield to an oncoming Toyota Mark X, leading to a severe collision. This alleged violation of traffic regulations is cited as the direct cause of the crash.

Devastating Consequences

The impact of the crash was immediate and fatal for the Nurgaliyeva sisters. Marjangul Nurgaliyeva succumbed to her injuries on the day of the accident while in intensive care. Her sister, Akgul Nurgaliyeva, passed away seven days later, remaining in a coma.

Forensic medical examinations revealed that Marjangul suffered multiple internal injuries, fractures, and a brain hemorrhage. Akgul also sustained severe head trauma, including a brain hemorrhage and an open skull fracture.

The loss has left a profound void. Akgul Nurgaliyeva is survived by her 15-year-old son and two-year-old daughter. Marjangul Nurgaliyeva was reportedly preparing for her wedding, scheduled for September 25.

Prosecution's Argument

During the proceedings on May 13, prosecutor Zhubanov addressed the jury, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He stated that while Izbasarov has admitted guilt, he is attempting to mitigate his responsibility by blaming the driver of the Toyota for speeding. The prosecutor argued that Izbasarov displayed negligence towards traffic rules, leading to irreversible consequences. "Two people died, and one family's life was divided into 'before' and 'after'," Zhubanov remarked.

The prosecution is seeking a sentence of five years imprisonment for Izbasarov, along with a seven-year driving ban.

Family's Plea for Justice

Gulmarzhan Nurgaliyeva, the sisters' elder sister, spoke about the immense grief and disbelief her family is experiencing. She shared that their 75-year-old father, who previously drove himself, lost his eyesight after the tragedy. "Losing two close relatives at once is a hardship that is impossible to describe in words. They were so young," she stated, appealing for the strictest possible punishment for the driver to serve as a lesson to others. She stressed the responsibility drivers have for the lives they carry.

Defense and Accused's Statement

According to the victims' lawyer, Manarbek Nazhiyev, there is no evidence to support Izbasarov's claim that the Toyota driver was speeding. While an exact speed could not be determined due to the lack of skid marks at the scene, surveillance footage reportedly shows Izbasarov making an improper, angled turn. The defense argued that the accident was unintentional and that the cause was the Toyota driver's excessive speed.

Representing the accused, the defense lawyer highlighted the significant moral and material damage caused to both parties. Rauan Izbasarov himself expressed his condolences to the victims' families, stating that he has been plagued by anxiety and guilt since the incident. He requested the court to consider his family situation, including his three daughters, one of whom is a university student, and asked for a just decision.
