Top Countries for Relocation in 2026: Switzerland Leads Global Rankings
Switzerland, Iceland, and Luxembourg have claimed the top three spots in the 2026 Migration Index, a comprehensive ranking evaluating 82 countries across 34 indicators. The index assesses crucial factors for potential movers, including cost of living, cultural environment, education systems, happiness levels, healthcare quality, safety, and opportunities for career advancement.
Leading Destinations for Expats
Switzerland secured the premier position this year, lauded for its exceptional earning potential, accessible medical services, and high safety standards. Following closely, Iceland ranked second, recognized for its strong income prospects, reliable security, excellent environmental metrics, and well-developed family policies.
Luxembourg earned the third spot, with its high earnings, robust safety, and strategic location in the heart of Europe making it an attractive option for those seeking stability and a high quality of life.
Outside of Europe, Australia emerged as a top contender, securing fourth place. Its welcoming immigrant community, promising career opportunities, and a lifestyle that prioritizes leisure contributed to its high ranking.
Germany rounded out the top five. As Europe's largest economy, it offers significant opportunities for immigrants, backed by guaranteed worker rights and long-term career prospects.
Best Countries for Families
When focusing on factors critical for families, such as education systems, parental leave policies, annual childcare costs, and the availability of international schools, Spain took the lead. Other European nations in the top ten for families included the United Kingdom (eighth), Iceland (ninth), and Croatia (tenth).
The top ten for families also featured China (second), the USA (third), Sri Lanka (fourth), the UAE (fifth), Australia (sixth), and Bangladesh (seventh).
Balancing Income and Expenses
The Remitly ranking also highlights countries that offer a favorable balance between the cost of living and income. This analysis considered purchasing power, mortgage payments relative to income, average rent as a proportion of salary, and the cost of dining out.
Saudi Arabia topped this specific category, driven by high average salaries, relatively low living expenses, and a lower burden concerning housing costs. Among European nations, Norway ranked fourth and Denmark fifth. Luxembourg placed eighth, and Ireland ninth.
Other countries making the list for income-expense balance included Bangladesh (second), the USA (third), Oman (sixth), Pakistan (seventh), and Nepal (tenth).
