Wooden Khans and Batyrs: A Hidden Museum of Kazakh History
In the city of Oskemen, Kazakhstan, lies a remarkable private museum that transports visitors through the country's storied past. This isn't just a collection of artifacts; it's a world crafted from wood, showcasing the bravery of khans and batyrs (warriors) through the intricate sculptures of self-taught artist Yuri Kostanyants.
A Journey Through Wooden History
Yuri Kostanyants, a former civil aviation pilot, harbored a lifelong passion for art, particularly woodworking. Despite facing hardships after the collapse of the Soviet Union and losing part of his collection in two fires, his dedication never wavered. Today, he works alongside several retired artisans, and generously shares his skills by teaching local children the art of wood carving free of charge.
World-Renowned Creations
One of Kostanyants' most ambitious projects is a sprawling wooden composition dedicated to Kazakh history. This masterpiece features khans, batyrs, and other significant historical figures of the Great Steppe. Each sculpture is meticulously crafted, not only capturing the likeness of the historical figures but also reflecting their character and their roles in history. His works have even been exhibited in Paris, yet recognition within his own country is still growing.
A Legacy for Future Generations
Kostanyants' greatest concern is finding someone to carry on his legacy. For the past 8-10 years, he has been reluctant to sell his creations, wishing for them to remain in his homeland. This museum stands as a testament to his talent, perseverance, and profound love for his craft and country.
