Zelensky: Trump Cannot Guarantee Peace for Ukraine, Cites Russian Aggression Concerns
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that former U.S. President Donald Trump cannot serve as a guarantor of peace for Ukraine. Zelensky expressed doubts that Trump's potential influence would be sufficient to deter future Russian attacks.
Concerns Over Russian Deterrence
Zelensky highlighted the absence of concrete involvement from international partners as a key factor leaving the issue of deterring Russia unresolved. "If our partners are not on the contact line, then why wouldn't the Russians attack again after some time? I don't understand this. What limits them?" he questioned, emphasizing the need for tangible commitments.
Skepticism About Trump's Impact
While some in the U.S. have suggested that Russia might refrain from escalation due to fear of a strong reaction from Trump, Zelensky disagrees. He pointed out the long timeframe involved, stating, "For example, they talk about U.S. President Trump. There are still two and a half years until then, and what do we do after that?" This highlights his concern about immediate security needs versus potential future scenarios.
Security Guarantees and Negotiations
Previously, the U.S. indicated readiness to provide security guarantees to Ukraine only after the cessation of hostilities. However, this was linked to Ukraine withdrawing its troops from certain areas in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a condition Zelensky deemed strategically disadvantageous for Ukraine.
In response, Ukraine is developing an updated draft of security guarantees. This document aims to ensure protection against renewed Russian aggression and define concrete mechanisms for partner actions.
