German Tourist Wins Payout Over 'Towel Wars' in Greece
A German tourist has successfully claimed €986 in compensation from his tour operator after being unable to secure a sunbed during his holiday in Greece. This landmark decision is one of the first court rulings addressing the pervasive issue known as the 'towel wars' at popular resorts.
The man، along with his family، found themselves forced to relax on concrete surfaces instead of beach loungers at their hotel on the island of Kos. Despite waking early، the tourist reported that all sunbeds were already occupied or reserved.
A Costly Holiday
The family had paid over €7،000 for their holiday package، only to face constant disappointment in finding available spots on the beach throughout their stay. After lodging a complaint with the hotel، the tourist received a partial refund.
Court Ruling Backs Tourist
However، a district court in Hanover ruled that the family was entitled to full compensation، acknowledging the tour operator's responsibility. The court emphasized that tour operators have a duty to ensure a reasonable balance between the number of sunbeds and the number of guests when making agreements with hotels.
During the proceedings، the tourist argued that both the hotel and the tour operator failed to enforce rules prohibiting the reservation of sunbeds with towels. His appeals to hotel staff reportedly went unaddressed.
This ruling sets a precedent in the ongoing battle against the 'towel wars،' a phenomenon that has become an unwelcome fixture of package holidays across Europe.
