Kazakhstan is set to explore an innovative approach to combat drug abuse by analyzing wastewater. This method aims to identify clusters of drug users، potentially pinpointing specific residential buildings and educational institutions where consumption is prevalent.

Wastewater as a Detection Tool

The proposal، championed by Altynshash Tabuldina، a deputy of the Astana City Maslikhat، leverages modern technology to detect traces of illicit substances in sewage systems. Even minute quantities can be identified، allowing authorities to map out areas with higher drug consumption rates.

"By taking samples from sewage pipes، we can see exactly where these situations exist – whether it's in a private house، or within the grounds of a university or another institution. This allows us to identify specific groups to work with،" explained Tabuldina.

Addressing Youth Drug Dependency

The deputy highlighted growing concerns over rising drug dependency among adolescents and young people. Tabuldina noted that traditional preventive measures، such as lectures، information campaigns، and video materials، have not yielded the desired results.

This initiative follows previous discussions about using wastewater analysis to detect drug use within schools and universities، a concept also previously mentioned by the Ministry of Justice.
