Kazakhstan is grappling with a critical shortage of skilled professionals in vital sectors such as energy، agriculture، and water management. This comes as a surprise to many، as the government has been actively allocating grants to encourage students to pursue careers in these fields، yet interest remains notably low.

Energy Sector's Urgent Need

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has highlighted the severe lack of specialists، particularly in the energy sector. Minister Sayasat Nurbek pointed out that just three years ago، the thermal power engineering program saw only 8 new students. While the situation has improved، the demand for qualified energy professionals continues to outpace the supply، posing a risk to the nation's economic stability.

Agriculture and Water Management Lagging Behind

Similarly، the agricultural sector، encompassing animal husbandry، crop production، and veterinary medicine، faces a significant deficit. Despite ample grant opportunities، aspiring students are not choosing these specializations in sufficient numbers. To address this، the government is implementing incentives، including salary increases and rural work bonuses، to make these careers more appealing.

The water management sector، including hydrogeology and the maintenance of hydraulic structures like dams and canals، is also experiencing a shortage of trained personnel. To bolster the workforce، a specialized university has been established to train professionals for this critical area.

Construction and Emerging Fields Require Attention

Beyond these core areas، the construction industry، especially in industrial development، is also feeling the pinch of a talent gap. Demand is high for estimators، designers، and specialists in complex engineering disciplines. The Ministry also emphasized the growing need for professionals in transport and logistics، particularly in the digital management of supply chains.

Looking towards the future، Kazakhstan is identifying new and promising fields that require skilled individuals. These include nuclear energy، with a demand for nuclear physicists and reactor operators، as well as aviation and space technologies، requiring everything from pilots to drone specialists.
