Kazakhstan President Launches Astana's Light Rail Transit System

Kazakhstan's President، Kassym-Jomart Tokayev، has officially launched the Astana Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in the nation's capital. President Tokayev took the inaugural ride as the first passenger، traveling from the "Airport" station to the "National Museum" station.

A New Era for Astana's Public Transport

The launch of the LRT system coincides with the operational start of a Unified Dispatch Center، designed to manage and monitor public transportation across Astana. According to Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek، this center will be staffed by 21 specialists.

Each LRT train set is engineered to carry over 600 passengers. A total of 15 trains، with 4 held in reserve، will operate on the 22.4-kilometer route in an automated، driverless mode. Key operations such as control، acceleration، braking، and door opening are fully automated. The system also includes provisions for manual control and communication with dispatchers during emergencies.

Project Significance and Future Outlook

The infrastructure encompasses 18 stations and a modern depot. Travel time along the entire route is estimated at approximately 40 minutes، with an average speed of 50-60 kilometers per hour. Trains are scheduled to run at intervals of 5-6 minutes.

President Tokayev emphasized the importance of this development for Astana and for Kazakhstan as a whole. He highlighted the vision of the capital becoming a major transportation hub in Eurasia in the future.

The President extended his congratulations and best wishes for success to the representatives of the Chinese company involved in the LRT's construction، as well as the staff of CTS Transportation and Astana LRT. "This is just the first step!" he remarked.

Plans are already underway for the second phase of the LRT project. This expansion will introduce new lines to areas including the "Astana-1" railway station، the "Zhetagara" residential area، and the city of Kosshy. The second phase is projected to cover an additional 26.5 kilometers and include 20 new stations.
