70-Year-Old Man Fined for Harassing Sleeping Passenger on Train

A disturbing incident aboard a train traveling from Aktobe to Almaty has sparked widespread discussion online after a 70-year-old man allegedly harassed a sleeping young woman. The victim herself captured the event on video, bringing it to public attention.

The Incident Unfolds

According to the young woman, the incident occurred late on the night of May 14th. While she was sleeping in her lower bunk, an unknown elderly man allegedly touched her inappropriately. Startled awake, the woman reacted by striking the man. He reportedly apologized and turned away.

She later recounted the experience to a fellow female passenger, but both disembarked hastily at the next station. The victim expressed her distress, stating, "He touched me. If he had assaulted me, wouldn't you have fought back?" She added, "I was very upset, I haven't been able to sleep for four days. I don't have the money to see a psychologist." The student also voiced her dissatisfaction with what she perceived as a lenient punishment for such actions.

Police Action and Court Ruling

The Transport Police Department confirmed the incident and stated that the 70-year-old passenger was apprehended at Turksib Station. Law enforcement officials forwarded the case materials to the court under the article for petty hooliganism.

A statement from the department's press service indicated, "The case was sent to the Specialized Inter-District Administrative Court of Almaty. By court decision, the offender was found guilty and fined 20 MCI (86,500 tenge)."

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about passenger safety and the adequacy of penalties for harassment on public transport.
