Air Quality Alert Issued for Major Kazakh Cities Including Almaty and Astana
Residents of Almaty, Astana, and four other major cities across Kazakhstan have been put on alert due to expected poor air quality on March 27. The national weather service, Kazhydromet, has issued a warning citing unfavorable meteorological conditions that are likely to lead to increased air pollution.
Understanding the Conditions
The forecast indicates a combination of factors contributing to the potential pollution spike. These include calm weather, weak winds, fog, and temperature inversions. Such conditions can trap harmful substances in the lower atmosphere, impacting air quality in urban areas.
City-Specific Forecasts
Astana is expected to experience variable cloudiness with no precipitation. Icy conditions on roads are anticipated during the night and early morning. Winds will blow from the east at 3-8 m/s. Temperatures will range from -2 to -4 degrees Celsius at night to 9-11 degrees Celsius during the day.
Almaty will see variable cloudiness and dry weather. The wind will shift from southeast to west at 3-8 m/s. Daytime temperatures are expected to be warm, ranging from 22-24 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures around 6-8 degrees Celsius.
In Karaganda, residents can expect variable cloudiness, no precipitation, and occasional fog. East to northeast winds will blow at 3-8 m/s. The temperature will be mild, from 0-2 degrees Celsius at night to 13-15 degrees Celsius during the day.
Petropavlovsk will also experience variable cloudiness and no precipitation, but with the added conditions of fog and icy roads. Winds from the southeast will be light, at 2-7 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will be around 0-2 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs of 9-11 degrees Celsius.
Pavlodar is forecast to have variable cloudiness and no precipitation, accompanied by fog. Icy road conditions are expected overnight and in the early morning. Winds will be from the northwest at 5-10 m/s. Temperatures will hover around -0 to -2 degrees Celsius at night and 10-12 degrees Celsius during the day.
The warning serves as a reminder for residents in these affected cities to stay informed about air quality levels and take necessary precautions.
