Almaty Public Transport to Feature Two Payment Systems for Rider Convenience

Almaty is set to enhance public transport convenience by allowing two electronic payment systems, Onay and Avtobys, to operate concurrently. This decision aims to provide passengers with greater flexibility and choice when paying for their fares.

The Almaty Department of Urban Mobility announced that both systems will be available, following considerations for various domestic operators. This move comes after initial plans to phase in the Avtobys digital payment system, which were met with some resistance from the Association of Bus Carriers.

Dual System Implementation

Previously, there were reports of Avtobys being gradually introduced across different routes, with a full rollout planned for the entire public transport network. However, the Association of Bus Carriers raised concerns and filed a complaint with the Agency for Protection and Development of Competition.

In response to these concerns and to improve the passenger experience, the city authorities have decided to integrate both payment platforms. The Department of Passenger Transport stated, "To improve the situation for passengers, the conditions of various domestic operators were considered. As a result, a decision was made to introduce a second operator in Almaty – Avtobys."

Avtobys Expansion

The Avtobys system is designed to offer diverse payment methods for public transport fares. Currently, buses are being equipped with the necessary technology for the second operator in a phased approach. The Avtobys system is also establishing a network of sales points for standard transport cards across the city.
