Armenian PM Clashes with Passenger Over Karabakh in Yerevan Metro

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan found himself in a heated debate with a fellow passenger on the Yerevan metro, with the discussion centering on the recent events in Karabakh.

Tensions Flare Over Karabakh Exodus

The confrontation occurred when the Prime Minister was questioned about the displacement of Armenians from Karabakh. Visibly angered, Pashinyan responded by recounting past accusations leveled against him. "We did everything for you to live in Karabakh, and in 2023, you precisely accused me of not allowing people to leave Karabakh for Armenia. And now you come here and say, 'Oh, we want to return.'"

Government Investment and Missed Opportunities

Pashinyan asserted that the government had invested substantial funds, described as "billions found by Armenians," in efforts to ensure the residents of Karabakh could remain in their homeland. He questioned the passenger, "Then why didn't you stay?"

Symbolism and Accusations

During the exchange, the Prime Minister, who was wearing a pin depicting a map of Armenia, urged the woman not to speak dismissively about the map. He concluded by stating, "Don't try to say that I gave Karabakh away, you who ran away like that."

It is important to recall that following the Second Karabakh War in November 2020, parts of Nagorno-Karabakh came under Azerbaijani control. In September 2023, Azerbaijan regained full control of the entire region, prompting over 100,000 Armenians to flee. Prior to this, the population of the unrecognized republic was recorded at 145,053 in a 2015 census, with ethnic Armenians constituting 99.74% of residents.
