Armenia's PM Warns of New War Amidst Opposition's Peace Deal Revisions
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has accused domestic opposition forces of attempting to instigate a new armed conflict within the country. Speaking at a press briefing, Pashinyan stated that while the opposition claims to be in favor of peace, their stated intention to review existing peace agreements should they come to power is, in fact, a pathway to war.
Opposition's Stance on Peace Deals
"They say they are not against peace, but if they come to power, they will review the peace agreement. I want to openly say that this is war," Pashinyan declared. He emphasized that such statements are not aligned with the positions of responsible politicians and suggested that foreign powers might be influencing the opposition's rhetoric.
Past Agreements and Tensions
This accusation comes in the context of previous diplomatic developments. Armenia had previously withdrawn from a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. According to former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, any agreement with Baku must be based on security guarantees.
A significant diplomatic event occurred on August 8, 2025, when Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a peace declaration in Washington D.C., with the participation of then-U.S. President Donald Trump. This agreement was intended to establish a U.S.-monitored corridor, dubbed the "Trump Corridor," connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan through Armenian territory.
