According to the Department of Ecology for the Atyrau region, the dust storm is likely linked to receding waters in the Caspian Sea. Monitoring stations did not record any exceedances in the permissible concentration limits for pollutants.

Residents were advised to minimize time spent outdoors, a recommendation that appeared to be widely followed, judging by the unusually empty streets.
