Car Dealership Manager Sentenced to 8 Years for Fraud and Theft

A former sales manager at a car dealership in Taraz has been handed an eight-year prison sentence for defrauding clients and his employer out of a substantial sum of money. The 25-year-old's fraudulent activities resulted in losses exceeding 334 million tenge.

Deception and Misappropriation

The young manager orchestrated a scheme that involved deceiving a female client. He promised to exchange her 90 million tenge car for a newer model. Instead, he sold her vehicle and pocketed the proceeds. To cover his tracks, he then illicitly provided the client with a new car from the dealership, valued at 83 million tenge, without management's approval.

Further Fraudulent Transactions

His illicit activities did not stop there. The manager proceeded to sell two other vehicles left at the dealership for consignment, pocketing 68 million and 34 million tenge respectively. In a further act of embezzlement, he sold a new Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the company for a significantly reduced price.

Court Ruling and Sentence Adjustment

Initially, the court found the manager guilty of fraud and embezzlement, sentencing him to 5 years and 1 month in prison. Mitigating factors cited at the time included his young age and partial admission of guilt.

However, the prosecution appealed this decision, taking the case to a cassation court. After reviewing the case materials, the higher court noted that the total damages of 334 million tenge remained uncompensated. Consequently, the court overturned the initial ruling, extending the prison sentence to eight years.

Consumer Advice

When purchasing vehicles from official dealerships, it is crucial to carefully review all contracts and seals. Ensure that all financial transactions are made directly to the company's official bank account, rather than handing over cash to individual employees.
