Illegal Markets Near Almaty's "Altyn Orda" Cause Chaos and Safety Concerns

Residents in the Karasai district of the Almaty region are expressing growing frustration over illegal, spontaneous marketplaces that have sprung up along the roadside. These informal trading spots, particularly near the "Altyn Orda" market, are creating significant safety hazards and contributing to traffic congestion and litter.

The issue gained public attention following the circulation of a video online, which clearly depicted rows of vendors operating directly on the shoulder of the Almaty-Bishkek highway. Shoppers were seen congregating near bus stops, exacerbating the chaotic scene.

Concerns Over Safety and Sanitation

Local residents argue that the situation has spiraled out of control, especially given the proximity of the official "Altyn Orda" market just a few hundred meters away. They question the necessity of these roadside stalls.

"It's impossible to get off the bus – you immediately run into these large tables. They sell clothes, food products. Where are the sanitary services? Salads, sausages – everything is out in the open. The area is full of garbage," one resident stated in the video. "We complained in the summer, we contacted them, even spoke with the deputy district mayor. What was the result? The stalls have only multiplied."

Complaints highlight overcrowding at bus stops, unsanitary conditions, and a clear danger to pedestrians, with trade occurring mere steps from the roadway.

Official Response and Actions

The Karasai district administration has stated that regular raids are conducted in the area, involving police and the entrepreneurship department.

"During a raid on February 19, 2026, facts of unauthorized trade in undesignated places were identified. Ten administrative protocols were drawn up against the violators," the administration reported.

Officials also noted that explanatory work has been carried out with the vendors. They were reminded of sanitary requirements and landscaping regulations, and encouraged to move to official trading locations.

The administration assured that inspections would continue to ensure order, road safety, and cleanliness in the area. Residents are hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon, leading to the removal of these illegal roadside markets.
