Iran's President Defines Non-Negotiable 'Red Lines' in US Talks
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Iran is prepared for a balanced and fair agreement with the United States, emphasizing that the nation's core interests are non-negotiable.
Speaking during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, April 12, Pezeshkian articulated Iran's readiness to reach a deal that ensures lasting peace and security in the Middle East.
Defining Iran's Stance
“Iran is fully prepared to achieve a balanced and fair agreement with the United States that ensures lasting peace and security in the Middle East,” Pezeshkian stated. He explicitly identified the "red line" in negotiations with the US as the national interests and rights of the Iranian people, indicating these are fundamental and cannot be compromised.
Obstacles in Negotiations
During his conversation with the Russian leader, President Pezeshkian provided an overview of the current state of negotiations with the US. He pointed to the US's "double standards" as the primary obstacle hindering progress towards an agreement.
Recent talks held in Islamabad between Iran and the US on Saturday reportedly lasted 21 hours but concluded without a resolution. US Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the parties could not reach an agreement, and the American delegation would return without a deal.
Ismail Baghai, the official spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, commented that the delegations failed to agree on several significant issues. He described the atmosphere of the talks as one of mistrust, noting that no one expected a breakthrough this time.
US President's Statement
In a separate development on Sunday, US President Donald Trump declared that the US would blockade any vessel attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. He also reportedly ordered the US Navy to monitor and detain any ships that paid Iran for passage through the strait.
