Karim Massimov's Ex-Son-in-Law Addresses Allegations and KTZH Role

Azamat Kapenov, the former son-in-law of ex-Prime Minister Karim Massimov, has released a video statement addressing accusations against him and detailing his past role at Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZH), the national railway company.

Clarifying Citizenship and KTZH Tenure

Kapenov stated that he obtained Kazakhstani citizenship in 2001 and held leadership positions within KTZH from 2003 to 2015. He explained that he relinquished his citizenship in 2015 due to his relocation to Russia for permanent residency, presenting documents to support this claim.

Dual Citizenship and Legal Compliance

Responding to public inquiries about dual citizenship, Kapenov admitted he was unaware of its illegality until recently, noting that regulations and digital tracking concerning dual nationality have since been strengthened.

Relationship with "Wild Arman"

Kapenov also addressed his relationship with Arman Zhumageldiev, also known as "Wild Arman," who was convicted of organizing a criminal group. Kapenov described Zhumageldiev as a brother and friend.

Demands for Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Asserting his innocence and stating he is not evading authorities, Kapenov called for an investigation to be initiated so the criminal case can proceed to court. He confirmed his current location in Kyrgyzstan via social media and urged for the search warrant against him to be lifted. He faces charges of extortion and reıderstvo (raiding/corporate raiding).

Denying Special Representation

When questioned by online users about whether he acted as a trusted representative for former Prime Minister Karim Massimov, Kapenov denied the allegations. He promised to reveal the full details of the case soon and asked for public patience. Previously, Kapenov was sanctioned with pre-trial detention in absentia in Kazakhstan. He is accused of granting illegal preferences to companies associated with him during his tenure as Vice President of KTZH, causing state losses exceeding 5.2 billion tenge.
