Kazakhstan: Mother of Six Sentenced for Human Trafficking
A 62-year-old mother of six in Kazakhstan has been sentenced to six years in prison for human trafficking. The woman, who was recognized as a "Kumis Alka" (Silver Wreath) award recipient for her many children, exploited vulnerable individuals by promising them employment.
Exploiting Vulnerability for Financial Gain
The case, heard in the Ayagoz District Court in the Abai region, revealed that the woman targeted socially vulnerable people between 2024 and 2025. She gained their trust through psychological pressure before deceiving them with job offers. Instead of securing employment, she sent them to farmsteads and kept the advance payments for herself.
Deception and Coercion
According to court documents, victims met the defendant in the city of Semey, where she promised assistance with job placement. In some instances, the convicted woman went as far as restricting the victims' freedom, using threats, and encouraging alcohol consumption.
Financial Transactions and Sentencing
Farmstead managers transferred sums ranging from 100,000 to 400,000 tenge to the woman's personal account for the workers. The defendant fully admitted her guilt, expressed remorse, and compensated the victims, who also forgave her and requested leniency.
Considering her full confession, remorse, compensation, reconciliation with victims, age, and her status as a "Kumis Alka" awardee as mitigating factors, the court imposed a sentence of six years of imprisonment. She will serve her sentence in a medium-security penal colony. The court's decision has entered into legal force.
