Kazakhstan's Health Crisis: Leading Causes of Death and How to Improve Lifespan
Despite significant advancements in Kazakhstan's healthcare system, including over a million surgeries performed last year, the nation's life expectancy still lags behind European standards. Renowned doctor and healthcare manager Erik Baijunussov shared insights into the country's health challenges and potential solutions.
Progress in Kazakh Medicine
Kazakhstan's average life expectancy is nearing 76 years. While this is a global average, it falls short of European countries (81 years) and Japan (84 years). However, the past three decades have seen remarkable progress, particularly in cardiovascular surgery. New specialized units have opened, leading to a surge in heart surgeries. Many conditions that were once fatal are now treatable, allowing individuals to lead normal lives.
Major Causes of Mortality
Last year, 133,000 people died in Kazakhstan. Cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause, accounting for 29,998 deaths, followed by nervous system diseases with 23,728 deaths. This highlights the high incidence of heart attacks and strokes. On average, approximately 150 individuals are hospitalized daily with heart attacks and 134 with strokes. Men, in particular, face a higher risk of premature death.
The Paradox of Kazakh Healthcare
While nearly a million people are registered with arterial hypertension, the actual number is likely much higher. Cancer claims 13,886 lives annually. Lifestyle choices and dietary habits significantly contribute to the rise in these diseases.
Understanding the Roots of Illness
A staggering 50% of illnesses are attributed to lifestyle factors. Many Kazakhs lead sedentary lives, and children are increasingly dependent on gadgets. Poor nutrition, excessive salt intake, smoking, and alcohol abuse all exacerbate health problems.
Pathways to a Healthier Future
Simple, everyday actions can make a significant difference. Walking 7,000 steps daily can help prevent heart disease. The government could also implement measures such as introducing excise taxes on sugary drinks and increasing taxes on fast food to promote healthier choices. Environmental cleanliness is another crucial factor.
Taking Personal Responsibility for Health
Ultimately, individual responsibility is paramount. Regular health screenings, adherence to medical advice, and abstaining from harmful habits are within everyone's control. A clear framework for health preservation, akin to a contract between the state, businesses, and citizens, is needed.
