Kazakhstan's Khoja Ahmed Yasawi Mausoleum Facade Removal Explained
Photos circulating on social media showing the exterior facade of the revered Khoja Ahmed Yasawi Mausoleum in Turkistan, a UNESCO World Heritage site, have sparked public concern. However, authorities have clarified that these developments are the result of planned scientific restoration work.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the action involved the "large-scale dismantling of glazed tiles in a localized area in preparation for scientific restoration work." Currently, other sections of the mausoleum's dome are being examined, and comprehensive removal operations are underway.
Dome Condition and Restoration Efforts
Ministry representatives noted that in recent years, deformation changes have been observed in some sections of the glazed coating on the mausoleum's dome. These changes were related to a covering installed during restoration work conducted in 2019-2020.
In response, specialists from the "Qazqalpyna Keltyru" (KazRestoration) state enterprise have been continuously monitoring the technical condition of the dome and preparing for scientific restoration. In May, the phased removal of weakened sections of the glazed facade began. Experts determined the necessity of completely dismantling the parts in an emergency state. As a result, on May 27, "Qazqalpyna Keltyru" specialists carried out the large-scale dismantling of the glazed tiles.
Work Under High-Level Supervision
It was stated that these works are under the personal supervision of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Information, Aida Balayeva.
"Constant monitoring of the situation is ensured. All decisions are made based on expert conclusions, scientific approaches, and international standards for the preservation of cultural heritage sites. There is no cause for alarm. The ongoing work is planned, scientifically based, and aimed at preserving the mausoleum, preventing further damage, and carefully safeguarding this unique monument for future generations," the ministry reported.
