Kazakhstan's Para-Athletes Shine at 2026 Winter Paralympics in Italy

Kazakhstan's national team has begun their campaign at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Italy, with athletes competing in para-biathlon on March 8th. This marked the second day of competition for the nation's para-athletes at the XIV Winter Paralympic Games.

Para-Biathlon: Men's Sitting Category

In the men's 12.5 km sitting biathlon event, Yerbol Khamitov delivered Kazakhstan's best performance, securing an impressive sixth place. Khamitov finished 2 minutes and 46 seconds behind the race winner. Teammates Sergey Ussoltsev and Yury Berezin finished in 21st and 22nd place, respectively.

Para-Biathlon: Men's Standing Category

Representing Kazakhstan in the standing category was Alexander Gerlits. Gerlits encountered three misses across four shooting stages, ultimately finishing in ninth place. He was 2 minutes and 55.7 seconds off the pace of the winner in a field of 19 competitors.

About the Paralympic Games

The XIV Winter Paralympic Games are taking place in Italy from March 6th to 15th. The event features 79 medal events across various disciplines, including para-Nordic skiing, para-biathlon, wheelchair curling, para-snowboard, alpine skiing, and para-ice hockey.

This year, Kazakhstan is represented by a team of seven athletes. The para-biathlon and para-Nordic skiing contingent includes Yerbol Khamitov, Alexander Gerlits, Sergey Ussoltsev, and Yury Berezin. Nurzhan Alimov, Anna Gracheva, and Vladislav Kobal are competing in para-Nordic skiing events.
